Background of the Study
Collaborative learning is an educational approach that emphasizes interaction, cooperation, and group work among students to enhance learning outcomes (Abubakar & Aliyu, 2023). In nursing education, collaborative learning has been identified as an effective method for promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, all of which are essential for providing quality patient care (Ajayi & Suleiman, 2024). By engaging in group activities, nursing students can share knowledge, learn from one another, and develop the interpersonal and communication skills necessary for successful nursing practice (Adeleke et al., 2023).
In Gombe State College of Nursing, collaborative learning is integrated into the curriculum through group projects, case studies, and interactive classroom discussions. However, there is a need to assess the effectiveness of these activities in improving nursing students' learning outcomes and their preparedness for clinical practice (Michele & Olamide, 2024). This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of collaborative learning in nursing education and evaluate its impact on nursing students' academic performance, teamwork abilities, and clinical competencies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of the benefits of collaborative learning, there is limited empirical evidence on its effectiveness in nursing education, particularly in the context of Gombe State College of Nursing. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult to determine the impact of collaborative learning on nursing students' academic achievement and preparedness for real-world clinical situations. Therefore, an investigation into the effectiveness of collaborative learning in nursing education is needed to provide evidence for its benefits and areas of improvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the effectiveness of collaborative learning in nursing education at Gombe State College of Nursing.
2. To assess the impact of collaborative learning on nursing students' academic performance and clinical skills.
3. To propose strategies for enhancing collaborative learning in nursing education.
Research Questions
1. How effective is collaborative learning in improving nursing students' academic performance at Gombe State College of Nursing?
2. In what ways does collaborative learning enhance nursing students' teamwork and clinical skills?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve collaborative learning in nursing education?
Research Hypotheses
1. Collaborative learning significantly improves nursing students' academic performance in nursing education.
2. Nursing students who participate in collaborative learning demonstrate better teamwork and clinical skills than those who do not.
3. Enhancing collaborative learning methods will improve nursing students' academic achievement and clinical competencies.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at Gombe State College of Nursing and assess the impact of collaborative learning on their academic performance and clinical skills. Limitations include the potential influence of individual differences in learning styles and the availability of resources for implementing collaborative learning effectively.
